NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB:

The Directors serve as the educational leaders responsible for managing policies and procedures of the school. The Directors ensure that all students are supervised in a safe learning environment that meets the mission of the school and includes Montessori, national, and state curriculum standards.
The Directors of Durango Montessori must possess an understanding of Montessori philosophy, have significant teaching experience in a Montessori classroom, and be Montessori certified in Elementary I, and (if possible) Elementary II.

Achieving academic excellence requires the school Directors to work collaboratively to direct and nurture all members of the school staff and to communicate effectively with parents. Inherent in the position are the responsibilities for scheduling, curriculum development, extracurricular activities, personnel management, emergency procedures, facility operations, and all financial duties.

JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The school Directors shall:

Manage, evaluate, and supervise effective and clear procedures for the operation and functioning of the school consistent with the philosophy, mission, values and goals of the school. This includes program evaluation, personnel management, office operations, classroom and material maintenance, emergency procedures, and discipline systems to ensure a safe and orderly school climate.

Conduct financial duties including all banking and bookkeeping related to collecting and depositing tuition, fundraising monies, and donations, Duties also include maintaining and managing expense and payroll records, overseeing the school’s budget, setting salaries, and working with the school’s accountant on fiduciary responsibilities.

Establish a professional rapport with students and with staff that has their respect. Display the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents and school personnel. Serve as a role model for students, dressing professionally, demonstrating the importance and relevance of learning.  Encourage all teachers to do the same.

Establish and promote high standards and expectations for all students and staff for academic performance and responsibility for behavior.

Supervise the instructional programs of the school, evaluating staff and their lesson plans, and observing classrooms on a regular basis to encourage the use of a variety of instructional strategies and materials. Provide regular feedback to staff regarding teaching skills, strategies, lesson delivery, classroom management, and professional etiquette in the classroom.

Keep the staff informed and seek ideas for the improvement of the school. Conduct staff meetings, as necessary, for the proper functioning of the school.

Organize and supervise procedures for identifying and addressing special needs of students in regard to academic, emotional, and health-related concerns.

Maintain a master schedule to be posted for all teachers.

With the help of the teaching staff, establish schedules and procedures for the supervision of students in non-classroom areas (including before and after school).

Develop clearly understood procedures and schedule regular drills for emergencies and disasters.

Establish procedures for evaluation and selection of teacher training programs and professional development courses.

Conduct regularly scheduled Board meetings. Communicate the needs, successes and general operations of the school.  Maintain accurate financial records.

Notify the Board in order to seek counsel, and involve the appropriate personnel, and agencies when there is evidence of students or personnel demonstrating behaviors of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, severe medical, social, or emotional conditions.

Schedule, attend, and coordinate school-sponsored fundraisers and functions.

With the help of the board and staff, obtain additional school funding through grant writing and fundraising.
