About Us

Durango Montessori Elementary School was established in 2005 and is located in the Smiley Building near downtown Durango.  As a nonprofit educational organization our goal is to provide quality education based on the Montessori philosophy for children ages six to eleven.

Durango Montessori houses two separate classrooms, the lower elementary (1st-3rd grade), and an upper elementary classroom (4th-5th grade). There are 20-26 students in each classroom with two or more trained teachers in each. Additionally, it is common for the classrooms to have a teaching assistant and/or college practicum teaching student also assisting children.

At Durango Montessori, both state and national standards are adhered to while teaching the Montessori curriculum.

Our students receive a well rounded school experience.  Each week, in addition to the core subjects taught in the classroom, the students enjoy ‘specials’ classes in art, music, cultural, peace education, and physical education.  Each specials instructor is professionally trained in their field. Some of our specials teachers are faculty from the Stillwater Music Program and others are provided to us through the Durango 9R Shared Schooling Program.
